William James Swann lives and works in Ardvasar in the south of the Isle of Skye and it is the light and atmosphere of this beautiful Island that provides his inspiration.
He is a committed plein air painter and has developed his plein air skills with The Buxton Artists and The Wapping Group. He works directly in front of the subject, in all weathers, times of day and year. William's work is freely painted with a painting knife and any additional work is kept to a minimum.
William has been a full-time, professional painter since 2008. He studied drawing and painting in an intercallated study course at Edinburgh College of Art during his time at Edinburgh University.
William has had regular national group and solo exhibitions since his first solo show in Edinburgh in 1970 and his work is in collections across Britain, Europe and the USA.
A tv programme was made for ITV in 2008 of William working on location in the Essex Marshes.
